WASTED TREASURE by Carolin Schelkle
Roof tiles made from a new material that repurposes the waste from palm production.
The project calls into question the way we consume building materials and takes a critical look at issues relating to the use of resources. The palm industry generates huge quantities of biomass that don’t decompose easily. By taking advantage of the natural properties of palm fibres (waterproof, fire-resistant, very strong) and using this material instead of sand, WASTED TREASURES adds value to this by-product. When formed into tiles, for example, the result provides an alternative to conventional building materials.
