Colourful living

injecting colour into interior design

Spring has arrived and nature is ablaze with resplendent colours. The sight of blossoming trees and plants brightens our mood and helps us feel more balanced. Colour is also increasingly breaking new ground in the field of interior design. However, at imm cologne this trend was visible not only in the area of upholstered furnishings, but across the whole interior design landscape.

Colour has always played an important role at Bretz, not only with the fabrics but also on the exhibition stands, as here at the imm cologne 2020. Photo: Koelnmesse

Interior designers may generally go for darker colours – from dark green and blue to black – but our homes are becoming increasingly colourful and that in an increasingly intensive way. A number of pieces of upholstered furniture premiered at this year’s imm cologne, for example, the futuristic, purple Absent modular sofa system by Prostoria and the Rego sofa landscape by Leolux in mustard yellow or baby blue – all these come in strong, plain colours. Patterns are more common on walls and floors. That’s because combinations of strong single colours – even without floral patterns – bring warmth and life into the design of our living rooms. Particularly popular combinations include a cool blue or a warm rosé to brick red with warm, neutral brown tones. Green and yellow are also in fashion, and produce pleasant optical light play that bring the best out of living spaces, and exude warmth and friendliness.

Colourful interior design

Charpai von Schönbuch
Aspa von Pulpo
Bongo Bay from Brühl
RGB from Burgbad
Flower from Tonton
String Pocket metal
Picolo from Softline
Twins from Sculpture Jeux
Misia from Daytona

Charpai by Schönbuch is made of solid wood and offers a wide range of matt lacquer colors for an individual design. The cushions in an equally large choice of colors - fabric and leather in various shades - can be combined freely. Photo: Koelnmesse

For the Aspa tables from Pulpo, MUT Design chose textured glass as a material in order to achieve a heightening effect when light is reflected. The effect is an increased colour saturation, depending on the numer of overlapping surfaces. Photo: Koelnmesse

As every year, Brühl presented itself colorfully at the imm cologne 2020. The new Bongo Bay sofa, with its organic, softly flowing and powerful lines, is reminiscent of rounded rocks or abstract painting. Photo: Koelnmesse

Stained glass and coloured metal. These are the two materials that significantly shape RGB from Burgbad (design Stefan Diez). The subtle sensuality draws coloured shadows on the walls and creates a lively uniformity. Photo: Koelnmesse

Flower has, as the name indicates, a truly symbolic design. Universally applicable in the living and object area. Available in a version with a soft PU-surface in numerous fresh colors; or soft padded, covered with fabrics and leather. Photo: Koelnmesse

The choice of colours for the String Pocket metal was decided in coordination with stylist Lotta Agaton. The neon version will for sure steal the show. Mounted on a white wall, the shelf will give character and excitement to any room. Photo: String Furniture

Softline offers Picolo in different fabrics and different colors. This compact and versatile lounge chair is an elegant addition to the interior design. Photo: Koelnmesse

Twins by Sculpture Jeux is a specular pair of small tables that combine to create personalized compositions through imaginative combinations of colours. Photo: Sculpture Jeux

For Traffic (design Konstantin Grcic) Magis has a large selection of fabrics and colors that can be selected using a configurator on the website. The frame is available in black or white. Photo: Koelnmesse

The Misia console table by Daytona is a wall table that draws on the art deco style with an Oriental touch. Manufactured using a modern industrial method, the dominant features are the brass frame and the vintage-look leather top. Photo: Daytona

However, this new fascination with colour in interior design has little to do with loud colour contrasts: the focus is more on combining pastel and earthy colours in intense tones, which together yield one base colour, while at the same time creating a distinct contrast to the rest of the furnishing. A number of the latest furniture collections also feature striking colours. This new colourfulness in furnishing is also always accompanied with interesting textures; for example, the classic 1970s material corduroy is currently enjoying quite a comeback.

Be it green, pink or brown – colour not only injects more warmth and cosiness, but also more glamour into our living spaces. When combined with dark wood tones reminiscent of art deco or the Danish modern style, and with gold, brass or other metallic accents, it is possible to use these colours to create a luxurious ambience that is attractive precisely because of that exciting contrast. You can see how exhibitors at this year’s imm cologne implemented this commitment to more colour in the “New Moments” new product portal. In the run-up to the trade fair, the companies had already had the opportunity to present teasers for their new products on the portal.
