Even in the age of digitalisation, they still exist, the custodians of law and order in our homes: closed chests of drawers, cupboards, sideboards in their low and high versions, bookshelves and furniture with drawers. Because even in an increasingly digital world, we still need open shelves and cabinets to present our collectors’ pieces – and storage space to protect our belongings from unwanted eyes. Whether people spend their days in the virtual world or are still attached to their material possessions, both types want to achieve an uncluttered look.

A minimalist decor or an abundant display of their great love of collecting: Whatever style they choose, an uncluttered look is an essential part of interior design for everyone who values creating their own living space. Anyone who took a look around imm cologne 2020 could easily see that there’s the right type of organising furniture for every type of organising personality. The exhibitors’ stands also demonstrated that these versatile items of furniture can be readily used as room dividers or displayed as eye-catching features.

Purism scores with shelves and boards

Colour is welcome in shelving and storage systems this year, just as it is with other furniture ranges. It’s down to individual preference whether these are loud shades or subtle combinations. Combining different materials is also popular, with wood and metal emerging as a strong trend. There were few large and bulky storage solutions on show at the interior business event in Cologne. Instead, many items of furniture appeared on a delicate base and impressed with their pared-back look. The New Moments digital product platform, which made its debut at this year’s imm cologne, featured a large selection of storage furniture, some of which have been awarded the That’s New label.
