Sustainably beautiful

An environmentally friendly interior design concept is based on furniture and accessories made from regrowing raw materials such as wood, bamboo or wool. But ideas such as recycling and upcycling are also playing an increasingly important role in the industry. Materials that can be processed again and again without any reduction in their quality or recyclates that can be recycled in turn are an important component of more sustainable production.

Unfold – a carpet with character

Inspired by the action of unfolding a small box, Unfold impresses with its geometric design and harmonious blend of colours. Its special highlight: The carpet is made from 100% bamboo or 100% wool yarn. While both are rated highly for their sustainability, bamboo is considered the rising star among the ranks of rapidly regrowing raw materials. Some varieties of bamboo reach heights of up to 30 metres and grow a metre per day, making it an exceptionally sustainable material. The fibres extracted from the material have a lively shine and can be dyed in vibrant colours.

At Belgian brand Casalis, the carpets are hand-tufted. Manual tufting is an efficient alternative to manual knotting. Using a tufting gun, the yarns are tufted row by row to create the carpet, a process requiring great skill and craftsmanship. A tremendously flexible technique, hand-tufting can produce genuine works of art – and Unfold is just one example.

Endless Hook – sustainable, functional and elegantly designed

With its new wall hook Endless, Essem Design is making an important statement – one that calls for more sustainability, functionality and elegantly designed products. By opting for recycled aluminium, the Swedish company has chosen a raw material that can be recycled countless times and fulfils 100% of the criteria for sustainable product development. “Aluminium is a strong, long-lasting material that consumes around 95% less energy in secondary production than it does in primary production,” explains Robert Bladh, the CEO of Essem Design. “Aluminium’s long lifespan also makes it a highly attractive metal.”

The wall hook was designed by Anna von Schewen. “I wanted to create a functional hook with a sculptural and playful character,” explains the designer. “I produced models with rubber bands, a material that produces shapes with a certain elasticity, which I then incorporated into the hook. I wanted its form to be functional but also interesting enough for it to work as a standalone piece. In my opinion, hallway furniture should be functional and inviting. You should be able to find your things when you’re leaving the house, and you’ve got to be able to put them down easily when you return. Endless meets all these requirements.”

CoMeet recyclate – an uncompromising statement

Homely archetype from Klöber.

CoMeet is Klöber’s home-comfort archetype. The CoMeet recyclate version is available in Simply Taupe combined with a skid base, four legs or a bar stool base. Copyright: Klöber

The name of the chair, CoMeet recyclate, clearly explains what material the product consists of. Recyclates are plastics made from used and reprocessed plastic products. They are produced through plastic recycling. During this process, plastic waste is collected, sorted, washed and processed into new plastic products or raw materials.

Some seating furniture today is already made from partially recycled materials. But CoMeet recyclate goes much further: The seat and backrest consist entirely of post-consumer polypropylene. This material has a high sustainability value. Post-consumer polypropylene is a key element of the circular economy and significantly reduces CO2 emissions. Klöber presented CoMeet recyclate at imm cologne 2024.

HEY-SIGN’s concept of relaxed home living is defined by clear and organic forms, purist design and the sustainable material wool felt. As per company tradition, all the brand’s products are made from 100% pure mulesing-free shorn wool. The felt production and manufacturing of the products are natural and sustainable and bear the label “Made in Germany”.

The company presented numerous new launches at imm cologne 2024. One particular eye-catcher was the Wave room divider, designed by Bernadette Ehmanns, Sonja Ophüls-Zilz and Reimund Braun. The felt room divider gives a space structure, is sound-absorbing and creates a pleasant atmosphere. What’s more, wool felt is breathable and improves the indoor climate. Wave is available in two versions: in a linear design or curved in a wavelike shape.
