The poetry of light

Light is vitally important to people. On the one hand, it must fulfil technical requirements so that we can see properly; general illumination enables us to find our way around in our surroundings. But on the other hand, light can influence the overall impression that an interior creates and its atmosphere. It can positively stimulate the activities taking place inside it. This is also true for Grau’s lighting. Over the course of four decades and two generations, Grau has experienced many changes, but it has always stayed true to its philosophy: Good light enriches life. We spoke with Timon and Melchior Grau about the different facets of good light.

1. Grau is synonymous with excellent, beautifully conceived light design. And it has been since 1987. Where does your fascination with light design come from?

Light is an amazing medium. It has a direct influence on how people feel and how interiors are perceived. Its possibilities in design and innovation are infinite. Most people have too little awareness of the importance of good lighting. With our lamps, we strive to show how enriching light can be. Living surrounded by a special light and strong design is a source of immense joy, and this motivates us.

2. It’s been demonstrated that light has an influence on mental health. How can a lamp be designed so that it has a positive effect on the mind?

The human biorhythm is guided by light, in particular its colour. Blue light wakes us up, while in the evening, warm light without a blue component has a calming effect because it boosts the secretion of melatonin. The latest studies1 show that the influence of blue light in the evening disrupts the biorhythm and increases the risk of mental illness by 30%.

3. You’ve recently launched a completely new light experience with your Sunset Dimming concept. How would you explain it to someone who’s never heard of it before?

Sunset Dimming is a new light spectrum that can be dimmed from clear light to deep warm spectra without a blue component. Users can adjust it freely to create the right atmosphere. With Sunset Dimming, you work in clear light during the day and calm down in the evening in a wonderful sunset atmosphere. Sunset Dimming boosts melatonin secretion and has a relaxing effect. It produces a unique ambience.

4. You worked on Sunset Dimming for ten years. What were the biggest challenges that you had to overcome?

Working with the colours of light is like painting. The possibilities are infinite, but creating a truly pleasant and beautiful atmosphere is an artistic process. There are a lot more things you can do wrong than you can get right. The art lies in fostering an atmosphere that appeals to the senses and feels natural at the same time.

5. What is the perfect well-being light for you?

In addition to Sunset Dimming, our new lamps create dynamic light compositions, which we call Vibes. The light moves gently, fostering an even more atmospheric light experience. It’s the kind of experience we’re familiar with from candles, fireplaces and the sun. Like them, our lamps are alive. They create a pleasant feeling and atmospheres of well-being.

6. Your lamps are used in both home interiors and work environments. Does a lamp designed for a living room have to meet different requirements to one designed for an office? Where are there areas of overlap? And where do differences emerge?

Work environments and living spaces are changing. They are becoming increasingly similar. Offices are evolving into platforms for collaboration and inspiring places that foster identity and motivate. Alongside the traditional single workspaces and areas for focused work, offices today also provide spaces for social interaction and organisational identification. Light plays a crucial role in this, especially in differentiating between the different areas. The Grau collection can illuminate all the settings in the office. Our Falling Sun series can be staged in different versions as sculptural drops in restaurants and forums. The Team series is the ultimate work light. And our new Fire series creates lively ambiences in lounge areas and cafés. In addition, we open up possibilities for planning large light installations in foyers and stairwells with Sun.

7. Lamps are becoming increasingly technically complex and more sophisticated today. Which direction do you see the sector moving in?

There are amazing new possibilities for creating atmospheres that speak to the senses with light. When technology is used consciously, it can generate immense added value. But complexity is the enemy of sensory appeal; that’s why it’s always important to us that technology remains a means to an end. And the end should be poetry with light.
